Japanese Traditional and Western Popular Influences on Music in Japanese Animation
Class: Introduction to World Music (21M.030)
Term: Fall 2018
Music in modern Japanese animation (i.e. anime) has evolved since the 1980s due to influences of both Japanese traditional music and Western popular music. Japanese animation, especially televised programs, is often accompanied by themed songs; I researched introduction sequences in anime. Anime has permeated Western culture, and to therefore appeal to a wider audience, its music has adopted Western popular instruments, such as guitars, basses, and drums. However, stylistic choices and embellishments in the music are derived from traditional Japanese music. I analyzed multiple songs over the span of anime’s history to determine the timeline over which this transition has occurred and pinpoint commonalities within this musical genre.
